Nuevo Hamburger

Overview

Nuevo Hamburger is a variable font that displays two opposites ends of the same war. During the American-Vietnam War a disproportionate amount of Hispanic men were drafted to fight over seas, while back at home in the states, large nationwide Hispanic led anti-war movements were occuring at the same time.

Nuevo Hamburger aims to honor and bring attention to this forgetten and often overlooked part of Hispanic-American history.

Axis One, Veterans and Family.

Jimmy Ramirez, a Vietnam War Veteran and my Great Uncle, painted this sign for his Grandfathers restaurant in Houston, Texas before entering the war.

This hand painted sign serves as the inspiration for the first axis, and still hands in the original building.

Axis Two, Resistance and Protest.

The second end of the Axis was directly inspired by the hand painted banner found from the Aug. 29, 1970 National Chicano Moratorium March, an anti-war protest.

I chose this to be the opposite axis as it was a direct response to the war and for it’s chunky and blocky design being a stark contrast to the first axis.

The Result

The Actual Final Result

Neuvo Hamburger was part of a larger research project about the Vietnam War and the large correlation with Hispanic-Americans. The research done for the typeface was compiled into an interactive experience that guided users through my findings.
